“Uguchu” means mother in the Garifuna language. Honduras is home to the largest Garifuna population of any country, celebrated for punta, a lively drum-and-dance music style born along the Caribbean coast near Trujillo. This original lullaby draws on those punta-drum and coastal images of Garifuna life, with “uguchu” used as a warm address rather than a literal translation.
