Frisian Lullaby Lyrics. An original lullaby inspired by Friesland, a Dutch province famed for its windmill-dotted dike landscape and its own officially recognized language. Frisian is considered the closest living language relative to English, sharing deep linguistic roots despite centuries apart, and in the coldest winters locals still dream of the Elfstedentocht, a legendary 200-kilometer ice-skating tour past eleven Frisian cities that can only take place when the canals freeze solid enough, sometimes not for decades at a stretch. Here you will find the lyrics, meaning, and chords.

Verse

Am Dm Am
Sleep now, mem’s little one, the windmills turn so slow,
Dm Am E7
the dike path rests in silence now, beneath the evening glow.

Sleep now, little one, the frozen canal is near,

tomorrow’s sun will rise for you, and chase away all fear.

What “Frisian Lullaby” Means

“Mem” means mother in West Frisian, an officially recognized language spoken in the Dutch province of Friesland, famed for its windmill-dotted dike landscape and the historic Elfstedentocht ice-skating tour. This original lullaby draws on those windmill and canal images of Frisian life, with “mem” used as a warm address rather than a literal translation.
