What “Fergana Uzbek Lullaby” Means

“Onajon” is a warm Uzbek word for “dear mother.” The Uzbek community of Kyrgyzstan’s Fergana Valley, especially around Osh, carries a centuries-old tradition of ikat silk weaving, tying and dyeing threads by hand before they are woven into vivid khan atlas fabric. This original lullaby draws on those weaving and valley images of Uzbek life in Kyrgyzstan, with “onajon” used as a warm address rather than a literal translation.
