What “Suo Gân” Means
No one knows exactly who wrote Suo Gân or when, it was passed down by voice through Welsh families long before it was ever written on paper, likely reaching back at least to the 1800s. Its gentle, rocking melody and simple words of warmth and safety have made it one of Wales’s most treasured lullabies, and its haunting use in the 1987 film Empire of the Sun introduced it to audiences far beyond Wales. The Welsh lyrics here are the real, traditional opening verse, the English lines are a singable adaptation rather than a literal translation.
