An original lullaby inspired by the Tuareg people of the deep Sahara in southern Algeria, known as the “blue people” for their indigo-dyed veils and their centuries-old salt caravans. The indigo dye used in Tuareg veils would traditionally rub off onto the skin over years of wear, giving rise to the “blue people” nickname, and unusually for veiling traditions worldwide, it is Tuareg men, not women, who traditionally cover their faces, a custom tied to ideas of respect and status.
