The Kingdom of Kongo, established around the 14th century, became one of the most powerful states in Central African history and one of the first to establish direct diplomatic relations with Europe, after its king converted to Christianity in the 1490s, and Bakongo weavers have long been celebrated for finely woven raffia cloth, a craft admired by outside traders for centuries.
