Samana Lullaby Lyrics. An original lullaby inspired by the Samana peninsula, home to descendants of free African Americans who settled there in 1824 and kept their own English-based traditions. The settlers were invited by Haitian president Jean-Pierre Boyer in 1824, during the period when Haiti controlled the entire island, as part of an effort to bring free Black settlers from the United States, and their descendants, sometimes called Samana Americans, kept Protestant church traditions and English distinct from the Spanish-speaking, Catholic-majority country that grew up around them.
