What “Humpty Dumpty” Means

First printed in England in 1797, though almost certainly sung as an oral riddle long before that. The verse never actually says Humpty Dumpty is an egg, that has always been the answer for the listener to guess, since only an egg could fall and truly never be put back together. A popular story links the rhyme to a cannon lost during the English Civil War siege of Colchester in 1648, but historians have never been able to confirm it, so it remains a fun piece of folklore, not a documented fact.
