“Neene” means mother in Fulfulde/Pulaar. The Haalpulaar (Fulani) people of Mauritania’s Senegal River valley farm millet and fish along the riverbanks that mark the country’s fertile southern border. This original lullaby draws on those river and farming images of Haalpulaar life, with “neene” used as a warm address rather than a literal translation.
