What “Star Light, Star Bright” Means

First written down by folklorists in the late 1800s, the rhyme was almost certainly sung long before anyone thought to collect it. The “first star” spotted at dusk is very often the planet Venus, bright enough to appear before true nightfall, and the custom of making a silent wish on it is a small piece of folklore that has barely changed in over a century, a quiet, hopeful way to close the day.
