Bamileke society is organized into dozens of distinct chiefdoms, each led by its own fon, or king, and among the most striking pieces of royal regalia is the beaded elephant mask, worn at important ceremonies by members of a chiefdom’s secret society, the elephant chosen as a powerful symbol of a ruler’s strength and authority.
