Sharq, whose name simply means ‘east,’ was historically Kuwait City’s oldest waterfront quarter, and before oil transformed the country’s economy, Ajam merchant families there played a central role in the pearling trade that sustained Kuwait for generations, connecting the city to trading partners across the Gulf. “Daja” means mother in Kuwaiti Persian, the endangered dialect of the Ajam community historically centered in Kuwait City’s Sharq quarter.
