Limon Lullaby Lyrics. An original lullaby inspired by the Afro-Costa Rican community of Limon, descended from Caribbean immigrants who built the Atlantic railway and brought calypso music. The Atlantic railway that first brought Jamaican and other West Indian laborers to Limon in the late 19th century also gave rise to the region’s banana export economy, and Afro-Costa Ricans were denied full national citizenship rights until a new constitution in 1949 finally recognized them as equal citizens of the country they had already called home for generations. Here you will find the lyrics, meaning, and chords.

What “Limon Lullaby” Means
The Afro-Costa Rican community of Limon, descended from Caribbean immigrants who built the Atlantic railway, is home to calypso music played on banjo, rooted in Trinidadian calypso and Jamaican mento. This original lullaby draws on those calypso and coastal images of Limon life, with “mama” reflecting the community’s English-Creole roots.
