Pontic Lullaby Lyrics. An original lullaby inspired by the Pontic Greek community, whose roots trace to the Black Sea coast and whose music centers on the kemenche fiddle. Most Pontic Greek families were forced to leave their Black Sea homeland in the early 20th century amid the upheavals following the First World War, resettling mainly in Greece, yet the community kept its music and language alive, still dancing today to the same driving kemenche rhythms their ancestors played on that distant coast. Here you will find the lyrics, meaning, and chords.

What “Pontic Lullaby” Means

The Pontic Greek community traces its roots to the Black Sea coast, where the kemenche, a three-stringed fiddle distinct from Crete’s lyra, accompanies fast circle dances called the serra. This original lullaby draws on those coastal and circle-dance images of Pontic Greek heritage.
