Mirandese Lullaby Lyrics. An original lullaby inspired by the Mirandese-speaking community of Portugal’s remote Miranda do Douro plateau, home to an officially recognized minority language. Mirandese has been Portugal’s only officially recognized second language since 1999, and linguistically it’s actually closer to Asturian and Leonese, spoken across the border in Spain, than to Portuguese itself, a distinction preserved in part by the plateau’s historic isolation. Here you will find the lyrics, meaning, and chords.

What “Mirandese Lullaby” Means
“Mai” means mother in Mirandese, an officially recognized minority language of Portugal’s remote Miranda do Douro plateau, distinct from Portuguese itself. The region is known for the pauliteiros, stick dancers who perform in the highland villages. This original lullaby draws on those highland and stick-dance images of Mirandese life, with “mai” used as a warm address rather than a literal translation.
