What “Amazing Grace” Means

John Newton spent years working in the Atlantic slave trade before a violent storm at sea in 1748 shook him into a slow religious conversion; he later became an Anglican clergyman and, in his later years, a vocal supporter of abolition. He published “Amazing Grace” in the 1779 hymnal Olney Hymns, paired long after with the tune known as New Britain. Its message of an undeserved second chance has made it one of the most widely sung and recorded hymns in the world; sung slow and unhurried, it works just as well as a gentle bedtime song as it does as a hymn.
