The marimba music and chants of Colombia’s Pacific coast, along with the currulao dance performed to them, were recognized by UNESCO in 2015 as part of a shared Afro-Pacific heritage that stretches south into neighboring Ecuador, a tradition kept vibrantly alive in the Choco region despite it being one of Colombia’s most historically isolated and underserved areas.
