Vlach Lullaby (Serbia) Lyrics. An original lullaby inspired by the Vlach community of eastern Serbia, known for its stone wine cellars and long viticultural tradition around Negotin. Near Negotin, entire hillside villages called pimnice consist purely of small stone-and-thatch cellars built only for aging and storing wine, with no houses at all, a distinctive form of vernacular architecture found almost nowhere else, and the Vlach language spoken here is closely related to Romanian, carried by communities who have called this corner of Serbia home for many generations. “Muma” means mother in the Vlach dialect spoken by the Vlach community of eastern Serbia, distinct from the Serbian word “majka.” Around Negotin, this community is known for its stone-carved wine cellars, the Rajacke pimnice, and a long tradition of hillside viticulture. This original lullaby draws on those vineyard and cellar images of Vlach life, with “muma” used as a warm address rather than a literal translation.
