Many Mushunguli ancestors were brought to Somalia from East and Central Africa in the 19th century, and some who escaped slavery found refuge in the fertile Gosha region along the Jubba River, building independent farming communities there, a history distinct from Somalia’s ethnic Somali majority that also shaped the Somali Bantu diaspora resettled abroad following the Somali Civil War of the 1990s.
