Mushunguli Lullaby Lyrics. An original lullaby inspired by the Somali Bantu community of the Gosha region, farming the fertile banks of the Jubba River in southern Somalia. Many ancestors of the Somali Bantu, also called the Mushunguli, were brought to Somalia from East Africa (today’s Tanzania, Mozambique and Malawi) in the 19th century, and some who escaped slavery found refuge in the fertile Gosha region along the Jubba River, building independent farming communities there, a history distinct from Somalia’s ethnic Somali majority that also shaped the Somali Bantu diaspora resettled abroad following the Somali Civil War of the 1990s. The Somali Bantu communities of the Gosha region live along the fertile banks of the Jubba River in southern Somalia, where sorghum and banana farming have shaped daily life for generations, with many speaking Mushunguli, an East African Bantu language closely related to Zigula in Tanzania. This original lullaby draws on those river-valley and farming images of Somali Bantu life.
