During Hmong New Year celebrations, young people traditionally take part in pov pob, a courtship game where boys and girls toss a small cloth ball back and forth in pairs, chatting and getting to know each other as they play, a lighthearted custom that has helped many Hmong couples first meet, and the terraced rice fields carved into the hills around Sapa remain one of northern Vietnam’s most striking sights.
