Manco Capac and the Golden Staff
A brother and sister rise from the waters of Lake Titicaca carrying a single golden staff, sent to find the one place on earth where it would sink completely into the ground.
Long ago, high in the Andes, the sun god looked down on the scattered, struggling peoples of the earth and decided they needed guidance. He called his own children, Manco Capac and his sister Mama Ocllo, and rose them up from the deep blue waters of Lake Titicaca, the highest lake in the world, placing in Manco Capac’s hands a single staff of pure gold.
“Travel the land,” the sun god told them, “and wherever you stop to rest, press this staff into the ground. The place where it sinks in completely, all the way to its very top, disappearing entirely into the earth, that is where you must build your city, and there you will teach the people how to live well.”
A long journey north
Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo set off together, walking for many days through valleys and over mountain passes, stopping wherever the land looked promising. Each time, Manco Capac pressed the golden staff into the soil, and each time, it sank only partway before meeting hard rock or stubborn clay beneath.
The valley where the staff disappeared
At last, in a green valley ringed by mountains, the brother and sister stopped to rest once more. Manco Capac pushed the staff into the soft, dark earth, and this time it slid down, down, down, sinking entirely out of sight without any resistance at all. Brother and sister looked at each other and knew, without needing to say a word, that they had finally found the place.
Teaching the people
They named the valley Cusco, and settled there among the people already living nearby, who gathered curiously to see the golden staff and the two strangers who had come from the great lake. Manco Capac taught the men how to farm the mountain slopes in careful terraces and how to build with stone, while Mama Ocllo taught the women how to spin and weave the softest wool into warm, colorful cloth.
In time, Cusco grew into the heart of a vast and remarkable empire, and to this day, the story of the brother and sister who followed a golden staff into the ground is still told as the very beginning of it all.
