Aztec Lullaby Lyrics. An original lullaby inspired by the Aztec (Mexica) heritage of central Mexico, whose founding legend of an eagle on a cactus still appears at the heart of the Mexican flag. According to Aztec legend, the god Huitzilopochtli prophesied that the wandering Mexica people would find their promised home at the exact spot where they saw an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a serpent, and when they finally witnessed that sign on a small island in Lake Texcoco, they founded Tenochtitlan there, the great city that modern Mexico City is built directly on top of today. Central Mexico was once home to the Aztec (Mexica) civilization, whose founding legend tells of an eagle perched on a cactus, an image still found today at the heart of the Mexican flag.
