In the villages of Punjab, lullabies are woven from the same warmth found in every other corner of Punjabi life — sung low, unaccompanied, to carry a baby gently into sleep. Punjab takes its name from the Persian words for ‘five waters,’ a reference to the five rivers of the Indus system that have shaped the region’s fertile land and rhythm of life for millennia, and much of Punjabi folk singing traditionally takes the form of short call-and-response verses called boliyan, exchanged during fieldwork, celebrations, and everyday village life.
