Indo-Fijian Lullaby Lyrics. An original lullaby inspired by Indo-Fijians, descendants of Indian laborers brought to work Fiji’s sugarcane plantations in the late 1800s. Indentured laborers who came to Fiji called their contracts girmit, a local pronunciation of the English word agreement, under a system that operated from 1879 to 1916, and over generations their descendants developed Fiji Hindi, a distinct dialect blending various regional Indian languages together in a new setting. Here you will find the lyrics, meaning, and chords.

What “Indo-Fijian Lullaby” Means
Indo-Fijians descend from Indian laborers brought to work Fiji’s sugarcane plantations in the late 1800s, and today celebrate Diwali as one of the island’s major festivals. This original lullaby draws on those sugarcane-field and festival-light images of Indo-Fijian life.
