Pipil Lullaby Lyrics. An original lullaby inspired by the Pipil-Nawat descendants of Izalco, El Salvador, heirs to a centuries-old indigo dyeing tradition. Izalco was once one of Central America’s leading centers of indigo production, a prized blue dye exported across the colonial world before synthetic alternatives took over, and the nearby Izalco volcano was for centuries so continuously active that sailors called it the Lighthouse of the Pacific, its glow visible far out at sea. Here you will find the lyrics, meaning, and chords.

Am Dm Am
Sleep now, nan’s little one, the indigo dye is still,

the weaver’s cloth rests folded now, upon the Izalco hill.

Sleep now, little one, the blue thread rests so near,

tomorrow’s sun will rise for you, and chase away all fear.

What “Pipil Lullaby” Means

“Nan” means mother in Nawat (Pipil). The Pipil-Nawat descendants of Izalco, El Salvador, are heirs to a centuries-old indigo dyeing tradition, once the region’s most prized export. This original lullaby draws on those indigo-dye and weaving images of Pipil life, with “nan” used as a warm address rather than a literal translation.
