Before oil transformed Bahrain’s economy, many Baharna families made their living pearl diving, a demanding and dangerous trade that shaped the island for centuries until the rise of cultured pearls in the early 20th century, and the island was once so densely planted with date groves it was nicknamed the land of a million palms. What “Baharna Lullaby” Means
“Yumma” is a Gulf Arabic dialect word for mother. The Baharna are the indigenous Arab community of Bahrain, long tending date-palm villages and fishing the island’s fertile, spring-fed coasts. This original lullaby draws on those palm-village and fishing images of Baharna life, with “yumma” used as a warm address rather than a literal translation.
