Sami Lullaby Lyrics. An original lullaby inspired by the Sami people, the indigenous people of the far north of Sweden, with a long reindeer-herding heritage, and their joik singing tradition. Sweden’s Sami parliament, the Sametinget, was established in 1993 to give the community a formal political voice, and joik itself was suppressed for generations under past assimilation policies before experiencing a strong revival in recent decades, now performed openly and proudly once again. Here you will find the lyrics, meaning, and chords.

What “Sami Lullaby” Means

“Eadni” means mother in Northern Sami, the language of the Sami people, the indigenous people of the far north of Sweden, with a long history of reindeer herding. Their joik, a distinctive unaccompanied singing style, is one of Europe’s oldest living musical traditions. This original lullaby draws on those reindeer and joik-song images of Sami life, with “eadni” used as a warm address rather than a literal translation.
