The Dungan are descendants of Hui Muslims who fled China following a failed rebellion in the late 19th century, and their language is a linguistic rarity: a form of Chinese written entirely in the Cyrillic alphabet rather than Chinese characters, the only Sinitic language in the world recorded that way.
