What “Grande Comore Lullaby” Means
“Mama” means mother in Shikomori, the Comorian language closely related to Swahili. Grande Comore, the largest island, is dominated by Mount Karthala, one of the world’s largest active volcanoes. This original lullaby draws on those volcano and coconut-grove images of Grande Comore life, with “mama” used as a warm address rather than a literal translation.
