Romansh Lullaby Lyrics. An original lullaby inspired by the Romansh-speaking community of Switzerland’s Grisons canton, home to the country’s fourth national language. Romansh is spoken by less than one percent of the Swiss population, yet it has held official status at the national level since a 1938 referendum, and because the language itself splits into five distinct regional written variants, a unified standard called Rumantsch Grischun was created in 1982 to help bring them together. Here you will find the lyrics, meaning, and chords.

What “Romansh Lullaby” Means
“Mamma” means mother in Romansh, Switzerland’s fourth national language, spoken by a small community in the canton of Grisons. Each spring, Romansh children celebrate Chalandamarz, ringing cowbells and cracking whips to chase away winter. This original lullaby draws on those alpine and cowbell-festival images of Romansh life, with “mamma” used as a warm address rather than a literal translation.
