Burgenland Croatian Lullaby Lyrics. An original lullaby inspired by the Croatian minority of Austria’s Burgenland region, settled since the 16th century near the Hungarian border. Burgenland’s Croatian community traces back to families who fled the advancing Ottoman Empire in the 16th century, resettling in villages along what is now the Austrian-Hungarian border, and their own dialect, Burgenland Croatian, is still an officially recognized minority language in Austria today, kept alive across a cluster of villages in the region. Here you will find the lyrics, meaning, and chords.

Sleep now, mama’s little one, the circle dance is still,

the village song has quieted now, upon the gentle hill.

Sleep now, little one, the border fields are near,

tomorrow’s sun will rise for you, and chase away all fear.

What “Burgenland Croatian Lullaby” Means

“Mama” means mother in Croatian. The Croatian minority of Austria’s Burgenland region has lived near the Hungarian border since the 16th century, keeping alive its own dialect, colorful costumes, and the circle folk dance called kolo. This original lullaby draws on those village and folk-dance images of Burgenland Croatian life, with “mama” used as a warm address rather than a literal translation.
