What “Garifuna Lullaby (Nicaragua)” Means

“Uguchu” means mother in the Garifuna language. The Garifuna community of Nicaragua, centered around Pearl Lagoon and Bluefields, descends from Afro-Indigenous exiles who settled the Caribbean coast in 1797, keeping alive their own songs, dances, and language. This original lullaby draws on those lagoon and coastal images of Garifuna life, with “uguchu” used as a warm address rather than a literal translation.
