Bluefields takes its unusual name from Abraham Blauvelt, a Dutch pirate who used the harbor as a base centuries ago, and Nicaragua’s entire Caribbean coast has long had its own distinct character, shaped by English, Miskito, and Garifuna influences quite different from the Spanish-speaking Pacific side of the country, a legacy of the region’s history as the British-protected Mosquito Coast. What “Garifuna Lullaby (Nicaragua)” Means
“Uguchu” means mother in the Garifuna language. The Garifuna community of Nicaragua, centered around Pearl Lagoon and Bluefields, descends from Afro-Indigenous exiles deported from Saint Vincent in 1797 who later settled the Caribbean coast, keeping alive their own songs, dances, and language. This original lullaby draws on those lagoon and coastal images of Garifuna life, with “uguchu” used as a warm address rather than a literal translation.
