Pamiri Lullaby Lyrics. An original lullaby inspired by the Pamiri people of Tajikistan’s Gorno-Badakhshan region, high in the Pamir mountains. Most Pamiris follow Ismaili Islam, a branch distinct from the Sunni Islam practiced by most of the rest of Tajikistan, and the traditional Pamiri house, called a chid, is built around a symbolic five-pillar design and a stepped skylight, its layout rooted in ideas that predate Islam, reaching back to the region’s ancient Zoroastrian influences. Here you will find the lyrics, meaning, and chords.

What “Pamiri Lullaby” Means
“Nan” is a word for mother in Shughni, one of the Pamiri languages spoken in Tajikistan’s Gorno-Badakhshan region. Pamiri women wear embroidered caps whose patterns and shapes identify their home village, a tradition passed from mother to daughter in these remote high mountain valleys. This original lullaby draws on those mountain and embroidery images of Pamiri life, with “nan” used as a warm address rather than a literal translation.
