Roma musicians have long formed the backbone of Romania’s lautari tradition, hereditary families of professional folk musicians whose playing shaped much of the region’s musical identity, and Roma melodies also influenced classical composers like Liszt and Brahms, who drew on this rich tradition in their own work. Romania’s Roma community also endured centuries of enslavement, known as robie, within the Romanian principalities, only formally abolished in 1856.
