Grande Comore Lullaby Lyrics. An original lullaby inspired by Grande Comore, the largest of the Comoros islands, dominated by Mount Karthala volcano. Mount Karthala is a highly active volcano, with more than 20 eruptions since the 19th century and a summit caldera about 3 by 4 kilometers across, and the island’s capital, Moroni, lies on the coast below its slopes, close enough that eruptions have sent ash drifting over the city itself. What “Grande Comore Lullaby” Means
“Mama” means mother in Shikomori, the Comorian language closely related to Swahili. Grande Comore, the largest island, is dominated by Mount Karthala, an active volcano that has erupted more than 20 times since the 19th century. This original lullaby draws on those volcano and coconut-grove images of Grande Comore life, with “mama” used as a warm address rather than a literal translation.
