An original lullaby inspired by Ostfriesland, Germany’s North Sea coastal region of windmills, dikes, and grazing sheep, distinct from the Frisian communities across the border in the Netherlands. East Frisian tea culture runs so deep it was added to Germany’s list of UNESCO-recognized traditions, served strong and black over a lump of rock sugar called Kluntje, with cream poured in last and never stirred, and much of the region’s low-lying land depends on its centuries-old dikes to stay dry at all. Mudder is the Low German word for mother, spoken in Ostfriesland’s windmill- and dike-lined landscape along the North Sea coast, a region with its own distinct Frisian heritage. This original lullaby draws on those windmill and coastal-dike images of East Frisian heritage.
