You Are My Sunshine Lullaby Lyrics. A deeply cherished American song, first recorded in 1939, often sung as a lullaby despite its bittersweet lyrics about love and longing. It remains one of the most requested bedtime songs to this day. The song is usually credited to Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell in 1939, though its true authorship has long been disputed, and Davis rode its popularity all the way to the governorship of Louisiana, where the song was later officially adopted as one of the state’s state songs. It is still sung today in homes everywhere — here you will find the full lyrics, meaning, and chords.
