Buuvein duu is the general Mongolian word for “lullaby,” and across the wide grasslands of Mongolia these songs often compare a crying baby to young animals of the steppe — a duckling, a swallow, a goose calling for its mother. Traditionally sung unaccompanied, and sometimes even folded into the low, resonant style of Mongolian throat-singing, buuvein duu carry the rhythm of a nomadic life lived close to the land and its creatures.
